I Tried It: Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss
Hypnosis may be best known as the party trick used to make people do the chicken dance on stage, but more and more people are turning to the mind-control technique to help them make healthier choices and lose weight.
Case in point: When Georgia, 28, decided she needed to lose the 30 or so pounds she put on after foot surgery in 2009, the dieting veteran turned to hypnosis.
The mind-control technique had helped her overcome a fear of flying in the past, and she hoped it would help her make healthy eating habits as well.
At first the self-proclaimed foodie was surprised by her hypnotherapist's recommendations.
“[She had] four simple agreements to which I would need to adhere: Eat when you're hungry, listen to your body and eat what you crave, stop when you're full, eat slowly and enjoy every mouthful,” Georgia explains. “As such, no foods were off limits and I was encouraged to eat everything in moderation-music to my ears!”
Who Should Try Hypnosis
Hypnosis is for anyone looking for a gentle way to lose weight and make healthy eating into a habit. One person it's not for? Anyone interested in a quick fix.
Reframing problematic thoughts about food takes time – Georgia says her hypnotherapist eight times over a year and it took a month before she started to notice a real change. “The weight dropped off slowly and surely, without huge changes to my lifestyle.
I was still eating out numerous times a week, but often sending plates back with food on them! For the first time ever, I was really tasting my food, spending time to take in flavors and textures.
Almost ironically, it was as if I had recommenced my love affair with food, only I was able to lose weight doing so,” she says, adding that in between appointments she worked hard to maintain her new healthy habits.
How to Use Hypnosis to Lose Weight
Hypnosis isn't meant to be a “diet” but rather one tool to help you be successful with eating nutritious food and exercising, says Traci Stein, PhD, MPH, a health psychologist ASCH-certified in clinical hypnosis and the former Director of Integrative Medicine in the Department of Surgery at Columbia University.
“Hypnosis helps people experience in a multi-sensory way what it feels when they are strong, fit and in control and to overcome their mental barriers to achieving those goals,” she says. “Hypnosis can specifically help people resolve the underlying psychological problems causing them to hate exercise, experience intense cravings, binge at night, or eat mindlessly.
It helps them identify the triggers and disarm them.”
In fact, it's helpful to not think of hypnosis as a diet at all, says Joshua E. Syna, MA, LCDC, a certified hypnotherapist at the Houston Hypnosis Center. “It works because it changes their way of thinking about food and eating, and it allows them to learn to be more calm and relaxed in their lives.
So instead of food and eating being an emotional solution, it becomes an appropriate solution to hunger, and new patterns of behavior are developed that enable the person to deal with emotions and life,” he explains.
“Hypnosis works for weight loss because it enables the person to separate food and eating from their emotional life.”
For people with no other mental health issues Dr. Stein says using at-home self-guided audio programs produced by a qualified hypnotist (look for an ASCH certification) are fine. But beware of all the new apps in the online market – one study found that most apps are untested and often make grandiose claims about their effectiveness that can't be substantiated.
What Hypnosis Feels
Forget what you've seen in movies and on stage, therapeutic hypnosis is closer to a therapy session than a circus trick. “Hypnosis is a collaborative experience and the patient should be well-informed and comfortable every step of the way,” Dr. Stein says.
And for people worried about being tricked into doing something strange or harmful, she adds that even under hypnosis if you really don't want to do something, you won't. “It's just focused attention,” she explains.
“Everyone naturally goes into light trance states several times a day – think of when you zone out while a friend is sharing every detail of their vacation – and hypnosis is just learning to focus that inward attention in a helpful way.”
Dispelling the myth that hypnosis feels weird or scary from the patient's side, Georgia says she always felt very lucid and under control.
There were even funny moments when was told to visualize stepping on the scale and seeing her goal weight.
“My overly creative mind had to first imagine myself removing all clothes, every bit of jewelry, my watch, and hair clip before jumping on in the nude. Anyone else do that, or is it just me?” (No, it's not just you Georgia!)
The One Downside of Hypnosis for Weight Loss
It's not invasive, it works well with other weight loss treatments, and doesn't require any pills, powders or other supplements. At the very worst nothing happens, putting it in the “might help, can't hurt” camp. But Dr. Stein acknowledges there is one downside: Price.
Costs per hour vary depending on your location but it ranges between $100-$250 dollar an hour for therapeutic hypnosis treatments and when you see the therapist once a week or more for a month or two that can add up fast. And most insurance companies don't cover hypnosis. However, Dr.
Stein says if it's used as part of a larger mental health therapy plan it may be covered so check with your provider.
A Surprising Perk of Weight Loss Hypnosis
Hypnosis isn't just a mental thing, there's also a medical component, says Peter LePort, MD, a bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Center for Obesity in California.
“You must deal with any underlying metabolic or biological causes of weight gain first but while you're doing that using hypnosis can kickstart healthy habits,” he says.
And there's another healthy perk of using hypnosis: “The meditation aspect can really help reduce stress and increase mindfulness which in turn can help with weight loss,” he adds.
So Does Hypnosis Really Work for Weight Loss?
There is a surprising amount of scientific research looking at the effectiveness of hypnosis for weight loss and much of it is positive. One of the original studies, done in 1986, found that overweight women who used a hypnosis program lost 17 pounds, compared to 0.
5 pounds for women who were just told to watch what they ate. In the 90's a meta-analysis of hypnosis weight loss research found that subjects who used hypnosis lost more than twice as much weight as those who didn't.
And a 2014 study found that women who used hypnosis improved their weight, BMI, eating behavior, and even some aspects of body image.
But it's not all good news: A 2012 Stanford study found that about a quarter of people simply can't be hypnotized and contrary to popular belief it has nothing to do with their personalities.
Rather, some people's brains just don't seem to work that way.
“If you're not prone to daydreaming, often find it hard to get engrossed in a book or sit through a movie, and don't consider yourself creative then you may be one of the people for whom hypnosis doesn't work well,” Dr. Stein says.
Georgia is definitely one of the success stories. She says it not only helped her lose the extra pounds but also helped her keep them off. Six years later she has happily maintained her weight loss, occasionally checking back in with her hypnotherapist when she needs a refresher.

Some skin conditions have a psychological dimension that may need to be addressed, too.
If you've ever blushed from embarrassment, you know that your skin can reflect what you're feeling inside. It makes sense, then, that emotional trouble might show up as skin trouble. Although cause and effect can be difficult to pin down, considerable data suggest that at least in some people, stress and other psychological factors can activate or worsen certain skin conditions.
The bond between skin and mind has deep roots, going back at least as far as skin-to-skin contact between newborn and mother, and is beyond the scope of this article. But communication through the skin is thought by many to be central to the development of feelings about the self and the world. Little wonder that our emotions might affect our skin — and that the relationship is ly to be complex.
Interest in this relationship has led to the development of a field called psychodermatology, or psychocutaneous medicine. According to clinical psychologist and psychodermatology expert Dr. Ted A.
Grossbart, at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, people who visit clinicians for a skin condition often have a related psychological problem that can affect the way they respond to medical treatment.
Many skin problems clear up or improve with standard therapies, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and topical medications.
The aim of psychodermatology is not to substitute psychotherapy for medicine, but rather to recognize that emotional issues may also be involved, especially when a skin condition resists conventional treatment.
It's important to evaluate and treat a skin problem medically before looking into its psychological aspects. But sometimes, a drug or other medical approach that doesn't work on its own becomes more effective when combined with psychological strategies.
Psychodermatology is not an established medical specialty in the United States, and this country has few dermatology-psychiatry “liaison” clinics — although the number has grown since the first was established at Stanford University in 1972.
But a number of dermatologists are seeking to improve their mental health skills, and some mental health professionals, Dr. Grossbart, specialize in helping people explore and manage the emotional aspects of their skin problems.
Perhaps not surprisingly, mind-body techniques such as self-hypnosis and relaxation are often part of the psychodermatological approach.
The skin we're in
The skin is the body's largest organ. It's a protective wrapper that defends the body against injury and infection and modulates environmental influences such as ultraviolet light, heat and cold, and air pollution.
It's also involved in a range of complex biological processes.
The skin contains sweat glands and blood vessels (which help regulate body temperature), cells that use the sun to manufacture vitamin D, nerve endings that are in constant contact with the brain, and an array of immune system cells that help ward off invaders such as bacteria and viruses.
The brain and nervous system influence the skin's immune cells through various receptors and chemical messengers — neuropeptides, for example. Scientists are investigating these and other substances in the skin that may respond to psychological stress.
They have already found that certain types of stress can interfere with the immune system, affecting the skin's capacity to heal.
One study found that surgical patients who felt less stress in the month before surgery had higher levels of IL-1 (an immune system chemical that promotes healing), less postoperative pain, and a shorter recovery.
Research also suggests that chronic negative stress can disrupt the function of the skin's permeability barrier, which normally keeps out harmful substances and prevents the loss of fluid from skin cell layers. This kind of disruption is thought to be a major factor in many skin diseases.
Types of mind-skin connections
Psychodermatologic disorders usually fall into three broad and sometimes overlapping categories:
- Psychophysiological. These are skin problems that have a physiological basis but can be exacerbated by stress and other emotional factors. They include, among others, acne, alopecia areata (hair loss), various types of eczema or dermatitis (skin inflammation), herpes (oral and genital), hyperhidrosis (profuse sweating), pruritis (itching), psoriasis (skin scaling and redness), rosacea (skin flushing and eruption), urticaria (hives), and warts. Some, such as profuse sweating and itching, can be symptoms of other medical conditions or reactions to medications — which is why a workup by a medical clinician and standard dermatological treatment are crucial before considering psychological factors. “Rosacea responds quickly to topical medications and will not respond to psychotherapy or one's attempts to manage stress,” explains dermatologist Dr. Suzanne M. Olbricht.
- Secondary psychiatric. A cosmetically disfiguring or potentially socially stigmatizing skin disorder such as severe acne, psoriasis, vitiligo (the loss of pigmentation in the skin), or genital herpes can produce feelings of shame or humiliation, erode self-esteem, cause depression and anxiety, and in general lower quality of life. There is much evidence of a correlation between skin disorders and depressive symptoms. One study, for instance, found that patients with severe psoriasis and acne were twice as ly to be suicidal as general medical patients. However, in such cases, it can be hard to distinguish cause from effect.
- Primary psychiatric. Some skin difficulties are symptoms of a psychiatric disorder, such as chronic hair-pulling (trichotillomania), the belief that the body is infested with organisms (delusional parasitosis), preoccupation with and distress about an imagined or minor defect (body dysmorphic disorder), and self-inflicted damage to the skin (dermatitis artefacta). Such illnesses require psychotherapy and sometimes psychiatric medications. But a dermatologist, who may be the first health professional the individual sees, can treat damage to the skin or scalp.
Helping the mind help the skin
Not everyone responds emotionally through the skin, nor do all people react the same way to having a skin problem. But evidence suggests that in some people, psychological issues often intersect with skin physiology, and treating both may offer the best chance for improvement.
When feelings of anxiety or depression intrude, medications such as antidepressants may be recommended.
Many nonpharmacologic interventions, including mind-body techniques, have shown promise, though most studies are small and uncontrolled.
Some approaches have effects that are not disease-specific but general — reducing stress and anxiety, improving the patient's sense of control, and enhancing immune function. Clinicians may use one or more of the following:
- Hypnosis. The hypnotic state, involving focused concentration or awareness, can affect many physiological functions, including blood flow, pain sensation, and immune response. A trained hypnotist is not necessarily required; many people can successfully practice self-hypnosis through relaxation, meditation, or focused breathing techniques (see below). In this state, the mind has a heightened capacity to affect autonomic functions (those we have little conscious control over, such as heart rate). A therapist using the technique called guided imagery may ask the patient to imagine having healthy skin or picture immune cells on the march. In small studies, hypnosis has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety; reduce pain and inflammation; control sweating and itching; speed healing; and limit behaviors such as scratching, picking, or hair pullingBelgian researchers reported in the August 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology that 67% of patients with significant hair loss (alopecia) who underwent hypnosis (including self-hypnosis) had total or partial hair regrowth during treatment, although some of them lost the hair again during the four-year follow-up period. In some studies, hypnotherapy, especially combined with behavioral and relaxation techniques, has helped reduce itching and scratching in people with atopic dermatitisHypnosis has been studied extensively for treating warts. In one controlled trial, which compared hypnosis to no treatment at all, 53% of the hypnotized patients — but none of the unhypnotized patients — lost at least some of their warts. Another trial compared hypnotic suggestion (of the warts healing and shrinking) to salicylic acid (the standard treatment for warts), placebo salicylic acid, and no treatment. The hypnotized participants lost significantly more warts than subjects in the other three groups.
- Relaxation and meditation. The relaxation response (a technique pioneered in Western medicine by Dr. Herbert Benson at Harvard Medical School), progressive muscle relaxation, focused breathing, and mindfulness meditation are well-established antidotes to the harmful effects of the body's response to stress. The mechanisms by which these practices (and hypnosis) fight disease or promote healing aren't fully understood, but they're one focus of a discipline called psychoneuroimmunology, which studies interactions among the brain, the immune system, and behavior.Relaxation techniques have been used along with conventional medical care in treating acne, eczema, hives, hyperhidrosis, and psoriasis. One small study of psoriasis patients found that those who listened to mindfulness meditation tapes while undergoing standard phototherapy (psoralen plus ultraviolet A, or PUVA) healed faster than those who had the light treatment alone.
- Psychotherapy. Many psychotherapeutic approaches can help in treating difficult skin disorders. For example, in cognitive behavioral therapy, the individual and her therapist can work to change behavior that damages the skin, as well as thought patterns that cause distress or hamper medical treatment. Supportive counseling can offer reassurance and help an individual better understand her skin ailment. Talk therapy may be particularly helpful with skin problems that for one reason or another have resisted every conceivable medical fix; an underlying psychological difficulty may be “speaking through the skin,” and exploring that possibility may be good for both skin and mind.

At least for some people with difficult skin conditions, psychological approaches — including mind-body techniques — appear to be helpful.
But more research is clearly needed to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions and to find out who is most ly to benefit.
Moreover, unless the cause is obviously psychiatric (as with chronic hair-pulling), skin and scalp problems should always be evaluated and treated medically before turning to psychological factors or treatments.

Does Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss Work?
Hypnosis is a tool some therapists use to help individuals reach a state of total relaxation. During a session, practitioners believe that the conscious and unconscious mind are able to focus and concentrate on verbal repetition and mental imagery. The mind, as a result, becomes open to suggestion and open to change with regard to behaviors, emotions, and habits.
Forms of this alternative therapy have been used since the 1700s to help people with anything from bed-wetting to nail-biting to smoking. Research on hypnosis has also shown some promise for treating obesity, as we’ll explore in this article.
Hypnosis may be more effective than diet and exercise alone for people looking to lose weight. The idea is that the mind can be influenced to change habits overeating. However, exactly how effective it may be is still up for debate.
One earlier controlled trial examined the use of hypnotherapy for weight loss in people with obstructive sleep apnea. The study looked at two specific forms of hypnotherapy versus simple diet advice for weight loss and sleep apnea. All 60 participants lost 2 to 3 percent of their body weight in 3 months.
At the 18-month follow-up, the hypnotherapy group had lost another 8 pounds on average. The researchers concluded that while this additional loss wasn’t significant, hypnotherapy warranted more research as a treatment for obesity.
An analysis that included hypnotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), for weight loss showed that it resulted in a small reduction in body weight compared with the placebo group. Researchers concluded that while hypnotherapy may enhance weight loss, there isn’t enough research for it to be convincing.
It’s important to note that there isn’t much research in support of hypnosis alone for weight loss. Much of what you’ll find is about hypnotherapy in combination with diet and exercise or counseling.
During hypnotherapy, your therapist will ly begin your session by explaining how hypnosis works. They’ll then go over your personal goals. From there, your therapist may begin speaking in a soothing, gentle voice to help you relax and to establish a feeling of safety.
Once you’ve reached a more receptive state of mind, your therapist may suggest ways to help you change your eating or exercise habits or other ways to reach your weight loss goals.
Certain words or repetition of certain phrases may help with this stage. Your therapist may also help you visualize yourself reaching goals through sharing vivid mental imagery.
To close the session, your therapist will help bring you hypnosis and back to your starting state.
The length of the hypnosis session and the number of total sessions you may need will depend on your individual goals. Some people may see results in as few as one to three sessions.
There are different types of hypnotherapy. Suggestion therapy is more commonly used for habits smoking, nail-biting, and eating disorders.
Your therapist may also use hypnotherapy together with other treatments, nutrition advice or CBT.
Cost of hypnotherapy varies depending on where you live and which therapist you choose. Consider calling ahead to discuss pricing or sliding scale options.
Your insurance company may cover between 50 and 80 percent of therapy provided by licensed professionals. Again, call ahead to learn more about your individual coverage.
You can find certified therapists by asking your primary doctor for a referral or by searching the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis database of providers.
The main benefit of hypnosis is that it allows people to enter a relaxed state of mind where they may be more open to suggestion to help change certain habits. For some, this may mean faster and more notable results — but this isn’t true for everyone.
Studies show that some people may be more responsive to the effects of hypnosis and thus more ly to benefit from it. For example, certain personality traits, such as selflessness and openness, may make a person more susceptible to hypnosis.
Studies also found that susceptibility to hypnosis increases after age 40, and women, regardless of age, are more ly to be receptive.
Hypnosis is considered safe for most people if practiced under the guidance of a trained therapist. It isn’t a means for brainwashing or mind control. A therapist can’t control a person to the point of doing something embarrassing or something against their will.
Again, hypnosis is safe for most people. Adverse reactions are rare.
Potential risks include:
- false memory creation
People who experience hallucinations or delusions should speak to their doctor before trying hypnotherapy. Also, hypnosis should not be performed on an individual under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Here are some things you can do at home to help your weight loss efforts:
- Move your body most days of the week. Try to get either 150 minutes of moderate activity (such as walking, water aerobics, gardening) or 75 minutes of more vigorous exercises (such as running, swimming laps, hiking hills) each week.
- Keep a food diary. Track how much you’re eating, when you’re eating, and whether or not you’re eating hunger. Doing so may help you identify habits to change, such as snacking boredom.
- Eat fruit and vegetables. Aim for five servings of fruit and vegetable each day. You should also add more fiber to your diet — between 25 to 30 grams each day — to curb your appetite.
- Drink six to eight glasses of water daily. Being hydrated helps prevent overeating.
- Resist the urge to skip meals. Eating throughout the day helps keep your metabolism running strong.
While hypnosis may provide an edge over other weight loss methods, it isn’t necessarily a quick fix. Still, research does suggest that using it in combination with a nutritious diet, daily exercise, and other therapies may help.
More research is needed to evaluate the use of hypnosis for more significant weight loss. For extra support, consider asking your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist or other professional who may help you create an individual weight loss plan to reach your goals.

While hypnotism might immediately make you think of people under a strange spell clucking chickens against their own will, the enigmatic practice has recently entered the health world with gusto.
It’s all thanks to UK hypnotherapist and personal trainer Rory Z Fulcher whose book Hypno-Fasting is creating some serious buzz.
So why have hypnotherapy and intermittent fasting been bundled together in what is seemingly a very odd pairing? According to Rory, hypnosis is actually a completely “normal, natural state of mind” that can “help people easily lose weight and keep it off permanently”.

“Hypno-Fasting (and hypnosis generally) isn't magic or mind-control… it's simply a different brainwave state,” he explains.
“Un in the media, where hypnosis is portrayed as 'blacking out', hypnosis actually allows you to become very focused, to the point where all other distractions can begin to become less important.”
Hypno-Fasting essentially uses the psychological tricks and techniques of hypnotherapy to help you maintain your intermittent fasting efforts (think, the 5:2 diet). There’s no denying the benefits of fasting.
Research has proven it has the potential to reduce biomarkers of disease. It’s been shown to improve brain focus and memory and it can activate “autophagy”, the process by which your cells get rid of waste material and undergo repair.
Then there’s the big one – it can assist with weight management, too.
Is there any evidence hypnotherapy actually works when it comes to weight loss?
Joyce Haddad, founder and director of A Dietitian's Mission and Chairperson of the Dietitians Association of Australia, says that while it could potentially aid weight loss, it’s not a “quick fix method”.
“Research on hypnosis as a stand-alone treatment has found inconclusive results.
A 2005 meta-analysis of 36 studies found psychological therapies cognitive behaviour therapy were predominantly useful when combined with dietary and exercise strategies; however, there has not been enough research conducted to allow a conclusion about the independent effect of other psychological approaches, hypnotherapy,” explains Joyce.
While hypnosis has the potential to aid weight loss if used on a continual basis, Hypno-Fasting is not going to work for everyone.
“Individual characteristics persistence, selflessness and openness have all been linked to higher hypnosis susceptibility. Whereas individuals who are not open to suggestion may find hypnotism less effective,” says Joyce.
If Hypno-Fasting is piquing your interest, it’s important to do your research before enlisting help. According to the The Australian Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy, hypnotherapy in Australia is an unregulated industry.
All it requires to call yourself a “professional” is completing a 2-day non-accredited training course. Scary, right? Ensure the person you’re enlisting to assist you has the correct level of qualifications and insurance.
Your best bet if you’re concerned about your health?
Seek advice from a professional trained in nutrition or food psychology.
“Forget about ‘quick fixes’ and seek an assessment from an accredited or registered nutrition professional, an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD). APDs are trained to personalise their dietary counselling to individuals, as they’re aware not everyone responds to the same approach,” explains Joyce.
“If individuals are interested in the psychological aspects to weight loss, it’s recommended they seek guidance from a weight-loss psychologist, particularly those who work closely with dietitians. Psychologists can help individuals find suitable methods to include in weight management programs, such as relaxation, mindfulness and even hypnotherapy.”
